What is Triad?

A Local Triad consists of the Sheriff, Police Chief's and older or retired leaders in the community who agree to work together to reduce criminal victimization of the elderly. Important to each Triad is an advisory council of law enforcement leaders and older persons which serve as a sounding board, information channel and catalyst for renewing emphasis on reducing crimes against the elderly - together.

What do Triads do?

  1. Educate: Sponsor crime prevention and victim/witness programs for older persons.
  2. Assist: Recruit and train volunteers to assist police and sheriff's departments.
  3. Emphasize: Staff reassurance programs for older persons to reduce fear and provide moral support.
  4. Communicate: Provide a forum for law enforcement and the community to share needs and concerns - and develop solutions.
  5. Involve: Bring Seniors and law enforcement together to develop community-wide solutions.

What Can Result?

  1. Reduce: Criminal victimization of older persons.
  2. Improve: Quality of life for older residents of the community.
  3. Greater: involvement of the community in implementing solutions.
  4. Focused: attention to the crime-related needs and concerns of older persons.
  5. Enhanced: delivery of law enforcement services to the elderly.

  • Adopt-A- Senior Program: Senior’s living alone with no family in the county are adopted by a Deputy Sheriff and is visited weekly.
  • RUOK Program: We call seniors that need to be checked on each morning Monday—Friday to make sure they are OK.
  • Project Lifesaver: For Alzheimer Patient’s or children with down syndrome or autism that may wander. We fit the client with a transmitter and use a receiver to home in to where the subject is when they wander away from home.
  • VIPS: Volunteers In Police Service. You can volunteer to come and work at the Sheriff’s Office and assist in everyday operations at your leisure.
  • Triad: This program which was established by the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, American Association of Retired persons (AARP) and the National Sheriff’s Association. Triad promotes partnerships between senior citizens and the law enforcement community, both to prevent crime against the elderly and to help law enforcement understand the needs and concerns of the elderly.
