Photo of dog and cat friendsCatawba County to hold pet "Adopt-athon" on May 31.  The Adopt-athon will be held at the Animal Shelter, adjacent to and behind the Justice Center off Highway 321 Business in Newton, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, 2008.  Animals at the shelter will be available for adoption, and pet owners may have their pets vaccinated for rabies and learn more about training for puppies, dogs and cats.  Full story

The public is invited to “drop in” anytime between 5:00 and 6:30 p.m. on May 19th in the cafeteria at St. Stephens Elementary School, at 684 30th Street NE, northwest of Conover. Citizens will have the chance to see displays of information, talk informally with representatives of Catawba Valley Community College, the Hickory Metro Higher Education Center and North Carolina Center For Engineering Technologies, and learn about the re-opening of St. Stephens Park and other County services.  Full story
